Eric recalls being evacuated two weeks before his 6th birthday and answers the question: "Eric, you were first evacuated to Folkestone on the South coast, which would appear to be the route any invasion would have come. So why did the government send you there?"
While Eric had an Anderson Shelter in his garden, there were also communal shelters built and improvised, as Eric explains in this episode. Eric explains more about the Anderson Shelter built in his family's garden, the Morrison Shelter developed for those without gardens (as shown below), and why he and his sister, Kitty, were unable to seek shelter when their school was bombed on 20 January 1943. As war loomed, Eric's family had an Anderson Shelter installed at the bottom of their garden and his Dad became an Air Raid Precautions Warden and, as he relates in this episode, he and his sister were to be evacuated from London.
